Asbestos Cancer.

Asbestos Cancer, Cancer by asbestos, mesothelioma, Cause of Asbestos Cancer

Overview of Asbestos Cancer:

Asbestos belongs to a class of fibrous minerals and has many industrial and day to day applications. The truth however is that asbestos can be deadly. Statistics suggest that millions of people worldwide have fallen prey to this monster. Over the past century many people have been known to have Mesothelioma due to exposure to asbestos. This is often referred to as “Asbestos – Cancer” and is the most common cancer caused by asbestos exposure. The only identified cause of Mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. Though this is a rare type of cancer but, the cure rates are rare as well. Mesothelioma owes its name to “mesothelium”, which lines the heart, abdomen and lungs. The problem with Mesothelioma is that it occurs only after a person has been exposed to asbestos for as long as 20 or 30 years. So, identifying dormant patients is very difficult and hence an early curative procedure cannot be initiated.

Asbestos Cancer is known to be of five types.

• Pleural – The inner lining of the lungs get affected in pleural Mesothelioma. This is by far the most common and malignant form of Mesothelioma.
• Peritoneal – The Mesothelium lining the abdominal cavity gets affected. This type constitutes about 25% of asbestos cancer.
• Pericardial – The inner lining of the heart becomes a hub for cancerous cells. Occurrence of pericardial Mesothelioma is about 5%.
• Testicular – This is by far the rarest for of Mesothelioma. The “tunica vaginalis” of the testicles get affected.

Symptoms of Asbestos Cancer:

As discussed earlier, Mesothelioma is usually not detected in the early stages. Symptoms can include chest pain, shortness of breath, weight loss, swelling of the face, anemia and sometimes even “pleural effusion” (accumulation of water in the lungs). Total absence of symptoms is also not rare.

Treatment for Asbestos Cancer:

Conventionally there are two treatment options:
• Curative – immunotherapy and gene therapy are done to try and cure the disease.
• Palliative – Chemotherapy, radiation, surgery or all together can ease the pain and suffering.

Word of advice:

Mesothelioma or Asbestos Cancer is most of the time not curable. So, prevention of asbestos exposure is advisable.
