Don't Let This Be Your Small Business Downfall

data recovery, disaster recovery, intrusion detection, email security, small business, business, security

As Small Businesses become more and more electronically linked to larger supply chains the signs are showing up that there is a lack of information security readiness. 56% of Small Businesses have encountered one or more security incidents in the past 12 months and 74% do not have an information security plan.

In efforts to protect the global business ecosystem from the risk of an information security collapse the Council of Better Business Bureaus and Privacy & American Business (non profit org.) are setting out on their own national education mission to inform small business owners on how too secure and protect customer and critical digital data.

Statistics show that a security issue usually has to arise before measures are taken to prevent future occurrences. The Council of Better Business Bureaus/CEO - Steve Cole commented:

"Small businesses aren't quite in step with their larger industry counterparts in addressing data security."
"They often believe they’re better protected than they really are, because they don't have in-house experts to advise them.”
"This makes us all vulnerable, as small businesses are a strong part of our economy. Business owners of all sizes need to be vigilant in protecting their customers, their employees and themselves."

The Council of Better Business Bureaus is offering a free, downloadable kit called Security & Privacy Made Simpler created for non-technical users in order to provide small businesses with a roadmap to help them protect customer data. The kit stresses everyday security practices like restricting access to sensitive records, keeping e-mails free of personal information and training employees on new privacy and security policies. It also touches on shredding documents, spot-checking employees’ backgrounds and not responding to phishing e-mails.

The web site will also offer news releases, current Security & Privacy news and they invite you to share your stories on their Horror Stories page. Stop by and get your copy of Security & Privacy Made Simpler.

Be sure to take the necessary steps to ensure that your business doesn’t become under attack by Internet predators.
