Finding that Work-life Balance

vacation, family, friends, balance.

We live in an age of inflation and downsizing. We also live in a world of increasing recession and collapse of once viable businesses. For this reason, good jobs are hard to find and even harder to keep. Sometimes, we are tempted to mortgage our lives for our jobs because we believe we can always buy our lives back after we get to the top. Unfortunately, this is not quite true.

It is important that we recognize this fact from the very outset. The business of life is not all business. We have to make provision for living as well.

So, how do we find that golden mean? How can we strike the perfect balance between work and life? It is possible to be an ambitions and hard working professional as well as a committed family man or woman?

The answer is an emphatic yes. But we have to work at it. So, for those eager to find that perfect work – life balance, I recommend the following tips.

Keep a Diary:
It is very easy to get lost in the unending maze of the corporate world. You owe it to yourself to ensure that this does not happen to you. So, buy a diary and use it effectively. At the end of the working day, write out your day’s business and personal activities. Note the areas that you have neglected and find a way to make amends as soon as possible.

Pay Attention to Family and Friends:
As you climb the corporate ladder, bear this in mind. Your family and friends should be you anchor. Find a way to create special time for your spouse, your children and your friends. Always remember important dates like birthdays and wedding anniversaries. Always spend these special occasions with family and friends and you will remain relevant to their lives.

Go on Vacations:
Whoever invented the annual vacation must have been a genius. Most people, including yours truly, would simply go nuts without the annual vacation. Don’t ever accept money in lieu of leave. It is a definite route to an early grave.

Change Your Job:
Now, this is a big step. But sometimes, it is the best thing that you can do in the interest of your health, your life and your sanity. If you are so busy that you don’t have time to eat well, you don’t sleep well and you can’t even take a vacation, I suggest you run for your dear life and take up a less demanding job.

Finally, I have to remind all the good people out there (as I frequently remind myself) that life is meant to be lived. Don’t sacrifice your life for your job. It would not be worth it at the end of the day. Find the perfect work – life balance and you will enjoy a better and richer life.
