First Day Experiences at Workplace

Few tips on Experience for the first day at workplace

Each one of us has a first day experience in the company we join. Either we are experienced or a fresher, we still look forward for few common things. It includes few main aspects such as job Satisfaction, career growth …….as it may vary depending on each individual.

As per the regular procedure, I too had a full day Induction Program. New articles giving exposure to the company was given. Information about leave, office
Timings, reimbursements, facilities given by the company and their
Limitations & usage, cab timings ……….” What things would new employees (we)
need to know about this work environment that would make us more comfortable? “Was a general question asked by each person during Induction?

The top guys joined us for lunch and educated us to the values, history and who is who in the organization. With little more brief detail about different departments, the whole induction program was conducted b/w 9 to 6 and we were given Employee ID’s/mail ID’s/new bank a/c.

As on the first day of reporting to work……I reported to my Reporting Manager. The saying goes that “It’s because of the boss that people leave work and not because of their job. I completely agree with this saying, as the next reporting team leader or reporting manager can create a vast influence on one’s thinking. We learn a lot in the first workplace from adjacent reporting person and try and copy good deeds from the person knowingly or un-knowingly. Each reporting person creates a change in us. A good boss extracts job from a person, knowing his/her weakness and strengths. The strengths of a person are utilized in the best way so as to bring profit to the organization. The employee is also appreciated by giving incentives & appraisal hikes.

The access cards and Introduction to respective people were done. ITSG (support group) helped me in my new s/y issue and configurations. A new workplace with new people, aspirations, growth included & a new set-up ….to sum up everything was new. For me as a wholesome it was a new job with a different career as I had switched role to a different department with new responsibilities.

I then came across my group people, who accompanied me for lunch. I had hoped that I wudn’t have to come across some incident as below (which has been extracted from an article that I have read)

On his first day, he dialed the pantry and shouted into the phone:
"Get me a cup of coffee, quickly!"
The voice from the other side responded:
"You fool, you've dialed the
Wrong extension! Do you know who you're talking to?"

"No" replied the trainee.

"It's the Managing Director of the company, idiot!"

The trainee shouted back:
"And do you know who YOU are talking to, you IDIOT?"

"No!" replied the Managing Director indignantly.

"Good!" replied the trainee and put down the phone.

Luckily I didn’t have to come across such a situation. A positive attitude and sense of belonging about the department crept in during the next few days and the rest of the week was fine. A little more than 2 weeks / months later it’s now become the routine of the day. It includes regular Arrival and departure times, scheduled lunch time • tea breaks …Irrespective of what our background is or where we come from we can look forward to a friendly and healthy work atmosphere. Differences lie in each work atmosphere. It’s the employees who can change any organization’s atmosphere to a healthier and happy living place.

A workplace is not permanent for each one of us. We work our best, create a mark for oneself, earn in the process and move on. Its colleagues who turn out to be good friends- now & forever, their help lent in team work and lots of other memories that we carry on down the lane. A career growth is achieved with dreams to be fulfilled. One fine day when we look back, we must enjoy good memories carried along with us forever.
