Becoming an author is a big time investment which in tutn brings even bigger dividends. There are very few authors as they are not a dime a dozen. Authoring is a game for the bold, the resilient, the creative as well as the persistent. The reason why there are few authors is because many may have the talent only few actually develop it. Talking from my own personal experience, authoring is not as easy as it looks, we can applaud the literary works of Professor Wole Soyinka, J.K. Rowling, Salman Rushdie, Ben Okri, Ernest Hemmingway and a host of others but the truth of the matter is that it is not easy. Here are some tips that would help bring out the hidden author in you. Authors are born as well as made. First they are born wit the talent and then they go ahead to develop it. My Dad once told me how lucky I was to have the writer's gift as I wrote flawlessly even when I never took it serious, he on the other hand had to go to a writing school to train how to write unlike I had the gift from birth.
The journey to becoming an author starts with a God given idea. All authors both known and unknown, sung or unsong can trace their works to an idea. Using myself as an example, I was on my bed during the fuel crisis coupled with the NLC strike just reading my collection of motivational booklets when an idea came to my mind. The authors of those booklets I read had touched many important issues of life at a minimal level, the still small voice instructed me to do an extensive work on what they had just scratched. Instead of having a motivational booklet touching areas like vision, adversity, risk, criticism, I would create one booklet each for these topics each having one hundred and twenty quotes with scriptural references. That I must confess was the most time consuming, money and energy demanding project I had ever embarked on yet it was worth it as people reading the manuscript alone were positively impacted.
J.K. Rowling was on her way to work when she got the idea to write the book Harry Porter which is one of the most celebrated books today. The great books you see on the book shelves have their roots in ideas. These ideas will come to you while reading other books just like me or when you are in a lonely quiet place. As an author you can't afford to be noisy as the world around you because your aim is to get the attention of the readers, that won't happen when you make the same amount of noise they make. When they see you as odd, then you've got their attention of your readers. If you must lead the orchestra, you must turn your back on the crowd.
The next step to becoming an author is to begin work immediately, don't procratinate. Will Rogers said 'Even if you are on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there'. Now the ball is in your court, play it with all your might, my mentor said in one of his numerous works, 'Untraded gifts have made many mediocres'. Now you have an idea, start working on it because procrastination is the thief of time. An apple seed until it is planted, watered and nurtured will remain an apple seed. Dr Myles Munroe once said 'The richest place on earth is the cemetery' because in the there are ideas that never saw the light of day, in the grave are books that were never written that would have blessed the world and even the very one that wrote the book.
Now that you have an idea and have begun working on it, here's a secret to sell your book an area where most authors tske for grsnted and that is the area of the book cover. As the headlines would make you buy a newspaper so an attractive book cover would make people buy the book. I'll give two instances where I saw the cover of the book 'The Magic Of Thinking Big' I was put off by the cover but following the saying never to judge a book by its cover, I decided to read and was fascinated by the information locked inside of it. I bought a motivational booklet which had an attractive cover but to my utter dismay was so full of crap that I regretted buying it in the first place. What made the difference was the book cover, so keep this in mind while you write your best selling book.
In conclusion here are two secrets of making extra money from your book and that is by converting them to e-books or audio books. Nowadays, people may not have the time to sit and read but they can slot in an audio book or download an e-book into their laptops. Here is one way to really rake in the cash while you await your royalty checks from the books. I believe with these few tips you are the next international best selling author to be celebrated
