How We Can See The Art

It’s very relative to claim something as an art or not. There’s no stagnant or opaque categories to this case and depend on specific culture or human’s daily life. Wayang, keris, gamelan in Java society or culture viewed as high art, but for West people they, may be, just an antropological matters. Caligraphy, that in China and Japan is a high art contained sublime spirituality, just viewed as science in Europe.

Generally, the concept on art has been changing. In the pramodern-religiomitic people, art was a part of people’s life. It arranged from people’s daily life until mistery of life and death. Here, the character of art was defined simbolically and was expressed decoratively. Art had the simbolic character because it caught not image regim (the appearance) but the above of it, that was spiritual energy. Art had decorative character because it underlined the atmosphere of mass ceremony. It was meant that art pointed to all events: words, gesture, man, tools, medium, etc. hold in interconnected relation between each other.

Modernism had changed that definition. Modern life depended on the clearly distingtions on everything. So, the art become independent, escaped from philosophy, science, and religion, as expression of individual and freedom of life, or the mixture between the deep sense, the unthinkable imagination, the smart tehnic or inteligence. In this era, art became a profession, exclusive, and elite matter: its pointing changed from event to prestigious product. Then, art was divided: theatre, poems, dance, music, etc that experienced its evolution in time. When religion had no power, art automatically taken the religion’s function: art became a place to explorate spiritual life, galery was modern’s church-actress was its prophets. It was needed space, contemplation, to see this modern art. Disinterested too was needed to understand this art, said Adorno. "Its meaning existed in its meaningless." Contemplation like this was the only one to see the spiritual dimension, the sublime, the unthinkable yet inevitable of this art.

The consequences of this reflective character had re-defined art time to time. For example in design art, impressionism was changed by expressionism, refused by cubism, deepened by abstractionism, by dadaism, and so on. It did the meaning of beauty or harmony meaningless. The important thing in this art was exploration tehnically and philosophic. The artwork of John Cage emerged without sound. Design art explorated pain and death. Chris Burden created artwork by killed himself, Günther von Hagens showed the plastinated death body.

Nowadays, in the postmodern era, art escapes itself from the intelectual and elite atmosphere above. It comes into the archaic form: comes into daily life again. Since performance art explorated daily life commonly, since Marcell Duchamp showed pispot, or box “campbell” by Warholl, art has became a part of daily life. And definition of art and non-art, too, has become unclear again.

Above of all, we must find a category (althought in process) about the only really art. In the history of west aesthetic, art's understood as ars, tėkhnė, and beauty. But, this definition forgets the other dimentions of art that is creation (poein) and perception (aisthesthai). From the emphazising this two dimentions, art is meant as process to create the new perception”. Art, according this definition must be connected to the truth, more than to the beauty: not the logic truth but the eksistensial one, that is Lebenswelt reality, said Husserl. Art is meaningfull just because it can either expresses the unthinkable or creates much of new possibilities.
