2. Defragment your Hard Disk once in every three weeks.
Disk Defragmenter consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard disk, so that each occupies a single, contiguous space on the volume. As a result, your system can gain access to your files and folders and save new ones more efficiently. By consolidating your files and folders, Disk Defragmenter also consolidates the volume's free space, making it less likely that new files will be fragmented. You must be an administrator to run this task and the task must not be run very frequently, it should be run after some intervals like 2 or 3 weeks.

How to run?
Open My Computer and right click the drive you want to defragment (CDFS not supported).
Scroll down to the bottom and select Properties
Under the tools tab select Defragment now.
A Window with a Disk Defragmenter title will appear.
Note: It is recommended that you first click on the Analysis button and let Windows check whether the drive needs defragmentation or not.

Other ways to open Disk Defragmenter
Click on Start button then point to All Programs
Select Accessories and in the pop-up Windows move pointer to System Tools
Select Disk Defragmenter.
OR
Click on Start and then Run and type Defrag %homedrive%

Disk defragmenter sometimes takes a longtime to complete and if the volume size is large then also it takes a longer time.
To run Disk Defragmenter the drive must have 15% of free space out of the total space of the specified drive.
The user must be an administrator and it is highly recommended that you DO NOT OPEN THE DRIVE OR ANY FILE OF IT DURING DEFRAGMENTATION.
Disk Defragmenter can defragment volumes that are formatted with the file allocation table (FAT) file system, the FAT32 file system, and the NTFS file system only.
In some systems, Disk Defragmenter is not installed/included. It can be found in some other softwares like TuneUp Utilities. To download the software, visit my website and select Products.

5. Scan for viruses and other infections that might be in your computer.
This is a very important step for every user especially for Internet Users.
You can scan your hard disk by the following ways
Windows Disk Scan
Installed Antivirus
Online Scanning
Virus Scanner/Virus Removal tool
Select any one option.
The user attempting these tasks must be an administrator and must have the knowledge of at least the Antivirus terms and statements mentioned below
Quartine
Trojan
Bug-Bear
Adware
Malware
Virus Infections
System Files
System Directory
Trojan Horse
Spyware
Move/Rename an infected file by the help of an antivirus
Ignoring infected files or allowing them to access the computer
Warning: If you do not know the risk of ignoring infected files or the meanings of the words mentioned above, contact a computer professional or service vendor or service provider or computer administrator or contact me.
You can anyways scan your computer but do not perform any necessary actions after the scan is complete even if prompted by the Antivirus.

Windows Disk Scan
Windows Disk scan is a service installed with Windows only. It does not remove potentially harmful viruses from the computer but scans for disk errors, file system errors and bad sectors. All files must be closed for this process to run. If the volume is currently in use, a message box will appear prompting you to indicate whether or not you want to reschedule the disk checking for the next time you restart your system. Then, the next time you restart your system, disk checking will run. Your volume will not be available to perform other tasks while this process is running. If your volume is formatted as NTFS, Windows automatically logs all file transactions, replaces bad clusters, and stores copies of key information for all files on the NTFS volume.
How to start?
Open My Computer and right click the drive you want to scan, scroll down and select Properties.
Select the tools tab and under the Error Checking title, click the button Check Now.
Two check boxes will appear that are unchecked and will appear like this…
Automatically fix file system errors.
Scan for and attempt the recovery of bad sectors.
Check the box with the action you want Windows to perform and then click OK.
Note: Some scans are executed at the boot time and a message will be displayed first.
NTFS scans many times are executed during startups but FAT file systems are scanned at the same time if it does not have any operating system installed in it.

Antivirus Scan
Antivirus programs scan e-mail and other files on your computer for viruses, worms, and Trojan horses. If a virus, worm, or Trojan horse is found, the antivirus program either quarantines it or deletes it entirely before it damages your computer and files. Make sure you have an Antivirus program or an Internet Security program installed on your computer. Most antivirus programs keep on prompting for a system scan, if you have not performed a scan from a long time, let your Antivirus scan the computer’s all files and folders completely. This task is highly recommended for Internet users and those who work with compact discs and/or other media such as pen drives or portable devices.
How to start?
Click start button on the taskbar and point to all programs.
Find the word Antivirus/Security and click on it.
When the program opens the main screen will include the option of System scan or Scan files and folders etc.
Click on the button and perform a full scan or a quick scan or configure scan.
OR
Check for the antivirus icon on the taskbar and click on it to open it and then scan for viruses and Trojans and other infections that can damage your system.
Note: The Antivirus scan can take up hours to complete depending on the speed of your computer and HDD size.

Online Scanning
You can also scan for viruses and other infections online. Its quite obvious that connection to the Internet is required.
Advantages
Scanning technology or the scanner is latest. It does not require updates and scans for all threats even those which are new. Any virus or infection can be scanned.
Disadvantages
It takes a long time to complete. The Internet Connection must not be disconnected or paused in between the scanning. Scanning from unknown sources can damage your computer more severely.
Recommended Scanners
Norton Online Scanner by Symantec Corporations
Windows Live OneCare online scanning by Microsoft Corporations.

Note: Scan your Computer online from trusted sources and scan only when you have a 256 kbps or higher connection for better and fast results.

Virus Scanner/Virus Removal tool
Virus scanners or virus removal tools are very small in size (not all) and they scan very fast. Some of them are not built to remove virus from the computer or any other infections, many are built just to scan for viruses. They do not provide real time protection. It does not protect your computer, just performs the job when started and displays infections. However, some scanners remove infections but sometimes they remove the infected file as well.
Example: if a system file in your Windows Directory is infected by a virus and the scanner detects it, it might remove the virus and the file as well, leaving your computer corrupt and you wont be able to start Windows again.
Virus scanners or removal tools are very small in size, hence some non-trusted sources also provide such tools which can permanently damage your system or provide ads or interrupting materials which can harm your PC.
Recommended Tools
McAfee Stinger by McAfee Corporations
Avast Scanner by Alwil Corporations
Kaspersky Scanner by Kaspersky Labs Corporations
Virus Scanner by Grisoft
Please visit my website’s Security page and download the Virus Scanners and Removers by trusted sources.
Note: Run scanners only from trusted sources mentioned above or those you trust on your own risk.

6. BackUp your Data
Please backup your important files and data to an external source other than your computer’s Hard disk. This helps you restore files and your data to the state when you performed the backup, if your computer is corrupt. You can backup any kind of data like music, videos, pictures, documents, games etc.
How to do?
Open My Computer from your desktop or Start menu and right click on the drive you want to backup and scroll down to Properties and click on Tools tab.
(this might not work in Windows Home Editions of XP and Vista)
You will see the option of backup there, select it and follow the onscreen instructions.

7. Run your PC on a NTFS.
NTFS means New Technology File System supported by all softwares, files, applications and Operating Systems.
NTFS is more powerful than FAT or FAT32, and includes features required for hosting Active Directory as well as other important security features. You can use features such as Active Directory and domain-based security only by choosing NTFS as your file system.
It is easy to convert partitions to NTFS. The Setup program makes conversion easy, whether your partitions used FAT, FAT32, or the older version of NTFS. This kind of conversion keeps your files intact (unlike formatting a partition). If you do not need to keep your files intact and you have a FAT or FAT32 partition, it is recommended that you format the partition with NTFS rather than convert from FAT or FAT32. Formatting a partition erases all data on the partition and allows you to start with a clean drive.. If you use FAT32, all users will have access to all files on your hard drive, regardless of their account type (administrator, limited, or standard).
NTFS is the file system that works best with large disks. (The next best file system for large disks is FAT32.)
Important: If your computer runs Windows XP and on the same time it has to run earlier version of Windows then FAT32 must be your primary partition at startup.
The comparison is done below
NTFS FAT FAT32
A computer running Windows XP or Windows 2000 can access files on an NTFS partition. A computer running Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 4 or later might be able to access some files. Other operating systems allow no access. Volume much larger than 2 terabytes is possible. Cannot be used on floppy disks. File size limited only by size of volume. Access is available through MS-DOS, all versions of Windows, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and OS/2. Does not support domains. Maximum file size up to 2 GB. Access is available only through Windows 95 OSR2, Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. In Windows XP FAT32 volume can be formatted up to 32GB only. Maximum file size is 4GB.

Some older programs may not run on NTFS volume.

Convert FAT, FAT32 to NTFS
You can convert your existing file system to NTFS by typing the following command in Command Prompt window.
Click on start and then on run, type cmd to open Command prompt.

CONVERT volume /FS:NTFS [/V] [/CvtArea:filename] [/NoSecurity] [/X]

volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),
mount point, or volume name.
/FS:NTFS Specifies that the volume is to be converted to NTFS.
/V Specifies that Convert should be run in verbose mode.
/CvtArea:filename
Specifies a contiguous file in the root directory to be
the place holder for NTFS system files.
/NoSecurity Specifies the converted files and directories security
settings to be accessible by everyone.
/X Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary.
All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid.
Convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs
You can also convert your File System by the following way:
Open My Computer and Right click on the drive you want to format, scroll down and select Format and change the file system from FAT32 or FAT to NTFS.
Formatting will erase all data on the file system permanently and you will not be able to bring back any file.

Note: All open handles might be disabled during the conversion, conversion might take a long time or it might even ask for boot time conversion. It might make some programs or files not work forever.
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU DO NOT CONVERT YOUR FILE SYSTEM THAT CONTAINS WINDOWS DIRECTORY. (where your Windows is installed)
For more help type “help convert” in command prompt window or mail me.
iRecommend® that you convert only those file systems which are empty, does not contain any file or have unwanted files because this process may bring some changes to the file making them unstable forever so do not convert drives that have important data.

8. Upgrade your PC
You can increase the performance of your PC by the following ways
Upgrade Random Access Memory (RAM) (related to HARDWARE)
Increase Pagefile size
Increase cache size
Reinsert RAM (related to HARDWARE)
Upgrading your PC will increase its performance and you will feel the difference.
Please contact your administrator if your not the one.

Upgrade your RAM
If you are running low on RAM, upgrade it now. Contact your system administrator, vendor or any other person who can help you in this. Memory that can be read from or written to by a computer or other devices is called RAM. Information stored in RAM is lost when the computer is turned off. More amount of RAM increases the speed of a computer. You can also mail me for more information on RAM and how to purchase it.
Note: Before purchasing RAM you must know that whether it will support your PC or not. Is it DDR1 or DDR2 or some other? Who manufactured it? Is there a slot in your PC to install it?

Increase Pagefile size
This is an administrative task, basic users please do not perform this task. Any mistake can make your system unstable.
How to change?
Click on start, then on Control Panel and then on System
Open System in Control Panel. On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
On the Advanced tab, under Virtual memory, click Change. Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change.
Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size, and type a new paging file size in megabytes in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, and then click Set.
If you decrease the size of either the initial or maximum page file settings, you must restart your computer to see the effects of those changes. Increases typically do not require a restart.
It is strongly recommended that you increase the size of Paging File and never decrease it.
To know on how much you should increase the paging file size, determine installed amount of RAM, size of the hard disk and the partition where Windows is installed and mail it to me.
iRecommend® that if your Windows is installed on a 20 GB partition and your Installed RAM is 512MB, (then your current pagefile size will be around 700-800 MBs) then consider increasing the size by 200MB. Do not place multiple pagefiles on different partitions on the same physical disk drive.
The pagefile size is always 1.5 times of the installed RAM by default.
Note: Do not allocate too much size to paging file as it cannot be overwritten.

Increase Cache Size
You must be an administrator and your computer must be running in normal mode (not in safe mode) to perform this task.
Click on start and then on run, type CMD.
Type the following command in the command prompt window.
Sfc /cachesize =
Type the size after “=” in MB’s
For example sfc /cachesize=100
This command sets the cache size from default to 100MB. You can set cache size to any amount.
iRecommend® that you set cache size as per the space in System Drive. If your system drive is of 20GB’s, then set cache size equal to 200MB. Never set cache size more than 250 MB because it will not bring any change to the system. If it is even set to 50 MB, then also it will work.

Reinsert RAM
If your computer is slow and it is not running normally, then reinsert RAM. (Random Access Memory)
DO NOT PERFORM THIS TASK ON YOUR OWN IF YOU ARE A BSIC USER OR IF YOU DO NOT KNOW ABOUT HARDWARE. CONTACT YOUR SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR.
Sometimes when a program executes it leaves its data on RAM, however when a computer is shut down the RAM is free from any data but when we hibernate or when the computer shuts down unexpectedly, data sticks on it and covers its space and when we the computer runs the next time, the available memory becomes low. Sometimes, the data is automatically deleted but not always. Some driver or software problems can be corrected by reinserting the RAM.
What you have to do?
Just open the cabinet and take any one or all the RAM’s out of their slots and reinsert them back after 2 minutes. This corrects many problems including display and speed problems.
The process is not listed here because performing this task is not suitable for all users.
IMPORTANT NOTE
Make sure your system is shut down properly and that it has no connection with the electricity. Chances of electric shock are high if the computer is switched on.
DO NOT PERFORM THE TASK IF YOUR COMPUTER IS HIBERNATED OR IS IN STANDBY MODE. Your computer must be TURNED OFF or SHUT DOWN properly before you perform this task.
Remove all wires attached to the cabinet including keyboard, mouse (if any) and/or monitor, power cable to reduce the risk of electric shock.

10. iRecommend.
PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE
Run the following tasks on your PC as mentioned below
Chkdsk Checks the disk for any errors. Once in two days
Defrag %homedrive% Defragments the volume where Windows is installed. (Task included in the document) Once in two weeks
Chkdsk /f Checks the disk and corrects errors on it usually the task is performed during boot time. Once in four days
Sfc /scannow Scans for System Files and detects errors that can be repaired. Once in two weeks
Blastcln Blaster/Nachi removal tool Once a month
Note: These commands function only under an administrative account and can be accessed by clicking Start then Run and Typing the command name for example click Start then Run and Type CHKDSK. Run one command at a time. If you copy and paste large amount of disk items frequently then defrag your Hard Disk Drive every week.
• You must have an active, functioning Antivirus or Internet Security program running all the time with an on-access protection and it must be updated so that it can protect you from the latest threats.
• When you are not on your computer, please shut it down. To help reduce Global Warming and other environmental problems please consider hibernating your PC instead of putting it to standby.
Hibernation: A state in which your computer shuts down after saving everything in memory on your hard disk. When you bring your computer out of hibernation, all programs and documents that were open are restored to your desktop.
Standby: A state in which your computer consumes less power when it is idle, but remains available for immediate use. While your computer is on standby, information in computer memory is not saved on your hard disk. If there is an interruption in power, the information in memory is lost.
For more information on hibernating and Standby please mail me or visit http://microsoft.com
• When you download a product from the internet, never RUN it, always SAVE the downloaded file so that you can scan it before using it and that it is easily available to you for future uses. This also reduces virus and other risks.
• Never open Junk e-mails or Spam e-mails from a non-trusted source, this might damage your system. If you do not know the person sending you the e-mail, and it is in the Junk folder, do not open it.
• When we work on our computers for long hours, it gets heated up. So, keep your computer’s cabinet in an open place where it gets the space it needs for ventilation. Please maintain a distance of about ½ metre between your cabinet and the wall. Consider putting your cabinet in an open place in a room where the air conditioner runs, so that your computer doesn’t put a break in your work.
• When you are installing a new copy of Windows on your system and if you are Formatting your Partition, never perform the QUICK formatting task, always use the normal formatting option.

So, this was all I could recommend you, please perform the tasks mentioned and experience the difference.
I need your feedback please, kindly visit my website by clicking here to provide feedback.
