Scrap Metal Dealers Having a Booming Business in Kericho after The Election Violence

politics and news

Scrap metal dealers in Kericho Town are having a booming business due to the availability of scrap metal following the General elections violence that happened around the whole country. A lot of property was spoiled beyond repair and all this is being sold to the dealers as scrap. The iron sheets that ones housed the thousands of the residences of this town, their metal household wares and much more are being sold to this dealer of scrap metal. This is ready cash and low class women and children are seen everyday streaming along the roadsides from the residential areas towards the towns business areas carrying huge loads of metal on their heads.

Owners of the biggest garages in Kericho Town who were forced to flee from the town for their safety to other safer places in the country and were forced to close down their places of work abruptly and could not carry all the metal in their garages provided the dealers with a good source of the metal.

The police have tried to scare the people from doing that but they were too wise for the police, they hid themselves when the police was present and came back when they had left. Since the violence stopped, Big trucks have been seen running through the town fully loaded with scrap metals. The trucks are more frequent than they were before the coming of the violence.

The lowest class people who were involved in scrap metal trade don’t seem to have any mercies for the owners of the properties that were destroyed by fire or by people, they seem not to have even a thought about it as they go through the deserted estates every morning togather the spoils of war and go on to make an income out of it. While the rest of us remained mourning about the heavy loses that begot us, to them it is a harvest time and they seem to be really enjoying it.

In this town, scrap metal sales for four shillings per a kilo of iron and a hundred shillings per a kilo of brass, copper and aluminum. The prices for the middlemen who then sell it to the licensed dealers at ten shillings per a kilo of iron and two hundred shillings for a kilo of brass, copper and aluminum with other types of waste materials being left out of the list because either they don’t make enough money or they are very scarce. Glass and batteries and animal bones aren’t in big demand anymore. Paper, plastics and metals dominate here in Kericho.
