Staying Awake at Night

insomnia, sleep, awake, night, relaxation, emotional distress, trouble, mental, get up, discomfort, symptoms.

Sleepiness. Tiredness. Irritability and emotional problems. Troubles with concentration, attention, memory, and learning. Decreasing efficiency and preciseness at work. Losing patience and quarelling too much at home, damaging one’s relationships and family life. Insomnia may produce all these things, and in the long term it can even result in a serious nervous exhaustion, a breakdown what makes the affected person ill and unable to carry on a normal and habitual lifestyle.
So insomnia, as lack of sleep is mentioned by a Greek word, is better to be avoided, or at least terminated.

To know which way it can be done we should know the reason of it.
Why is one staying awake at night?

There are simple reasons like noises or other disturbing phenomena in the surroundings, including too hot or too cool environment; indigestion or eating too much in the evening, or on the contrary - remaining hungry when going to bed; drinking coffee or tea in the late hours; emotional distress, thinking very hard to solve a problem, mental occupation like that of an artist, a scientist, etc. Extreme physical strain as well as pain or other discomfort may also provide a reason. These ones normally cause sleeping disorders just for one or a few nights, without making one ill. And of course, there is no problem if the affected person then can have a good sleep during the daytime hours as for example artists do it many times.

But once the sleeping difficulties tend to last, and cause a lack of sleep, generating any of the above mentioned symptoms, they need an intervention to restore the appropriate balance of activity and rest.
The first step of doing that is to try to free the body and/or mind from the troubling factor. In order to stop ’chewing on’ thoughts or emotions we can use simple relaxation techniques (maybe as simple as listening to music), meditation, autogenous training, even saying prayers. In case of physical unpleasantness sometimes it helps if we cool our hands and feet with cold running water, and without drying them, go back to bed. This can lower a higher blood pressure, too, which may also be responsible for a sleeping disorder.

A relaxing hot bath with essential oils can help a lot as well. Add at least 50 drops of essential oils to a tub of water, using three to five kinds – the ones you like - of the following ones: basil, cajeputi, cinnamon, clary sage, fennel, geranium, jasmine, lavendel, neroli, orange, peppermint, sandalwood, styrax, tangerine, vetiverian, ylang-ylang. Extracts of certain herbs can provide a good alternative to enhance sleeping, such as the decoction of poppy seeds or oats, as well as the infusion of lime flowers, hops, lemon balm, lavendel, passion flower, etc.

There are authors who recommend a person who is unable to sleep to get up and do something, regarding this a better solution than staying awake in bed and worrying about being unable to sleep. Well, it can work in some cases but at the same time threatens with staying awake even longer. If next day one needs to get up early and go to work, it does not seem to be a very good idea.

One has to consider that, if the insomnia regularly occurs in a given period of the night – say, for example, waking up at 1 o’clock and staying awake until 3 o’clock – a pysiological disorder may be present, being manifested in the efforts of the energy system to restore healthy functions. Especially the liver or the lungs may be affected in such cases. We may choose to consult a doctor or an alternative therapist to identify the problem and cure it.

Serious insomnia when one cannot sleep at all for a significant period can indicate a psychic disorder or a mental illness what needs to be examined and treated by a qualified psychiatrist or neurologist.
